YAKIMA - Lewis-Clark Twins Legion baseball coach Kevin Maurer has seen some incredible pitching performances throughout the years, but Julian Washburn's outing Friday afternoon may have topped them all.
Washburn held the Thurston County Bandits of Washington to a single hit during a 6-1 win on the second day of the Yakima Wood Bat Tournament.
"It was pretty incredible what he was able to do, his command was phenomenal," Maurer said. "Even his misses were great misses, maybe an inch or two off the plate. Only two balls were actually hit decently, other than that there wasn't even a chance of a guy getting close to him today."
The senior right-hander tallied 15 strikeouts during his 109-pitch performance and surrendered his only walk in the bottom of the fourth.
"My assistant coach and I were talking about it, we haven't seen anything like this in a while," Maurer said. "When you're able to strike out that many guys, that's a performance you'll remember for a long time."
The Twins (23-8) entered the fifth clinging to a 1-0 lead, but AJ Davis and Chad Adkison sparked the offense with a combined four RBI.
"With Washburn being so dominant early on, our offense kind of stayed at bay," Maurer said. "That fifth inning is when they decided to take a little pressure off and do their part."
Lewis-Clark continues tournament play today with a 2 p.m. meeting against the Northwest Crimson. A victory gives the Twins an opportunity to potentially earn a bye to the championship game Sunday.
