LEWISTON - An early lead for the Lewis-Clark Cubs did not quite hold up against a Bellevue Honda rally in the final of the Clancy Ellis Tournament at Harris Field.
The Cubs - who topped FM Sports 9-5 in the semifinals earlier on Sunday - had defeated Bellevue 8-1 in pool play, and seemed on course for a repeat showing when they led 8-1 after two innings, but a sixth-inning Honda surge erased their advantage, forcing an eighth in which it was Bellevue that secured the winning run.
"We started the game off hot and I think we just relaxed," said Lewis-Clark coach Ramon Royce, whose team went 5-1 overall in the tournament. "We gave away too many walks, free passes. We definitely have to give them credit; they were able to make that huge rally in the sixth, and got some timely hits."
"It was a heartbreaker to be honest with you, but I'm proud of our boys and how hard they competed throughout the tournament" Royce concluded. "Our guys have really started coming together and getting hot, so it was good to see them heat up and play well as a team."
