Missoula Mont. - Making his first start of the season, the Twins' AJ Davis gave up one hit in six innings of work without issuing a single walk - a claim to fame the team's closer, Nate Savolainen, was also able to make, as Lewis-Clark notched its third shutout of the season, this one while giving up just two hits.
The final score was 6-0 as the Twins started the Missoula Mavericks Memorial Tournament with a win over another northwest squad, the LaGrande Legends of Oregon.
"He was just attacking throughout the whole game," Twins coach Kevin Maurer said of Davis, who on Thursday fanned five and needed just 64 pitches to get his team to the final frame of this American Legion baseball game.
"There wasn't a guy who stepped in the box that he even gave any bit of confidence while they were in there," Maurer added, noting that only twice did Davis even get to three balls in his hit count.
"First start of the year after a long bus trip, where our offense wasn't awake yet, for him to be dialed in the way he was... you can't ask for much more out of a guy."
When the Twins' bats did wake up, no bat was more woke than that belonging to Jaden Phillips, who had four RBI on three hits, one of them a double.
The Twins (9-2) will continue tournament play today with two games, first facing Gonzaga Prep at 3 p.m. PDT and then the hometown Missoula Mavericks at 6 p.m. PDT, both those games still in Missoula.
