Chase Adkison laced three hits, including two doubles, and pitched a 1-2-3 final inning in relief Thursday night as the Lewis-Clark Twins defeated the Apple Valley Loggers of central Washington 11-5 at Harris Field in the first round of the Palouse Summer Series baseball tournament at three sites.
After struggling with the off-speed pitches of Tanner Vanlith in the second inning, the Twins (15-5) uncorked three doubles in a five-run eruption in the third, keying a Legion win that saw L-C crack six doubles and Alex Light notch three singles.
"Their starting pitcher made us look a little silly in the second," Twins coach Kevin Maurer said, "and we made an adjustment. One through nine, it was a total team display."
That allowed starting pitcher Kyle Van Boeyen to settle down after a shaky start, and he wound up crafting a four-hitter with seventh-inning help from Adkison.
The 16-team tournament in Lewiston, Pullman and Colfax will wrap up with a championship game Sunday. The field has been split into four pools.
