MISSOULA, Mont. - The Lewis-Clark Twins suffered what their coach described as a "hiccup."
But Lewis-Clark coach Kevin Maurer said he was proud. His team, he said, fought. It was just too much to overcome a Central Washington Spuds splurge in the fifth that handed the Twins their second loss of the Missoula Mavericks Memorial Tournament.
An eight-run frame handed the Twins a 10-9 loss Saturday and eliminated the valley squad from competing for a title
Today, the Twins will play at noon PDT against Bellevue Honda to round out their stay at the round robin event, where they're 1-2 so far.
L-C was led by AJ Davis' three RBI, but fell to 10-4.
The Twins got the tying runner on first in the final inning, but weren't able to advance him beyond that. In the sixth, the Twins also had the tying run on second, before a contested call ended the inning on a double play.
"Danny Robinson hit a ball real hard down the line that we thought hit the dirt, but the umpire said (it was caught) and they ended up doubling off Luke White (who had taken off from second)," Maurer said. "It's hard to win a game if you give up eight runs in one inning, but our guys still fought."
