MISSOULA, Mont. - They fell behind by five runs immediately and got an earful from their opponents, but the Lewis-Clark Twins were never ruffled.
L-C roared to an eventful 16-5 American Legion baseball victory over Bellevue Honda during Sunday's final session in the Missoula Mavericks Memorial Tournament.
After the first two Bellevue batters were retired, the western Washington club managed to piece together a rally that resulted in a 5-0 lead.
The Bellevue team was also "chirping pretty loud during that inning, kind of being disrespectful to the game," L-C coach Kevin Maurer said.
"When our guys ran in, we told them that it's not OK to disrespect the game the way they were," Maurer said. "And our guys responded to that."
In the Twins' half of the first, their initial seven batters reached base and they tied the score at 5-all. Cleanup hitter Luke White delievered a grand slam during the comeback.
L-C (11-4 overall) then scored four in the third and seven in the fourth on its way to invoking the mercy rule.
After its quick start in the first, Bellevue was bottled up the rest of the game. It had just one baserunner, who reached on a walk, and he was erased on a double play.
L-C starting pitcher Cooper Lund struck out the side in the second and also blanked Bellevue in the third and fourth. Chase Adkison pitched the fifth.
Meanwhile, Bellevue's outspokeness continued. Its first-base coach got ejected in the first inning, and its other two coaches were booted in the fourth, Maurer said. Even with all of Bellevue's coaches tossed, the game continued, with players in the dugout making pitching changes, Maurer said.
"I've never seen anything like it before," Maurer said.
"It was pretty special how our players kept their composure through all of that," the Twins coach added. "They stayed even-keel through the whole process and proved it between the lines."
All nine Twins in the lineup got hits, with Danny Robinson and Ryder Shoults smacking two apiece. White finished with five RBI.
The Twins will return to action Tuesday at home in a 5 p.m. doubleheader against Post Falls.
