The Lewis-Clark Twins encountered some stiff competition in a Legion baseball home doubleheader against River City of Kennewick, taking on a team with 11 college freshmen on the roster.
At the end of the day, Twins coach Kevin Maurer was satisfied with a split.
Lewis-Clark fell 4-3 in a thriller at Harris Field before downing River City 7-5 in the nightcap Wednesday.
"It was great competition for our guys," Maurer said. "(River City) has a lot of guys who can throw really well, so that first game just took us a while to get settled in."
The Twins (14-5 overall, 2-0 league) surrendered a four-run frame in the opener, but the team clawed its way back into contention with runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
"We had the tying run on second base in the seventh," Maurer said. "Jaden Phillips roped one into the left center gap, but their center fielder was able to track it down."
Right-hander Julian Washburn dominated the mound for the Twins in the second meeting between the two teams, holding River City to one hit through 42/3 innings of work.
"Washburn pitched a heckuva game," Maurer said. "We have to be wary with the next couple of games with the pitch count rule, so he had to come out in the fifth."
Lewis-Clark also benefitted from a shaky start by the River City pitching staff.
"The first three runs of the game were basically given to us," Maurer said. "We had five straight walks, so our guys' plate discipline was really good in that first inning."
Phillips lifted the Twins in the fourth with an RBI double that Maurer said "gave us some breathing room."
River City threatened in the final frame, scoring four to cut the deficit to two runs. But a relief appearance from Cooper Lund helped Lewis-Clark secure the win.
"Cooper just came in and closed the door for the last two outs," Maurer said.
The Twins open play in the Palouse Summer Series against the Apple Valley Packers of Wenatchee at 7 tonight at Harris Field.
