Mikel Jensen goes the distance

Alex Light's hustling leadoff triple set the stage for the pivotal fifth inning, as the Lewis-Clark Twins beat Walla Walla in the finale of a nonleague series at Harris Field.
With the score tied at 2-all, the Twins scored three runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. Light led off by hitting a ball in the gap, and rather than stopping at second, he motored to third when he noticed the outfielder sauntering to the ball.
"That gets me as excited as anything when a guy makes a hustle play like that," L-C coach Kyle Blackwell said.
Light then scored on Kolt Olson's single, then Olson came home on Jake Munoz's triple. Munoz scored the final run of the inning when Walla Walla couldn't handle Luke White's hard-hit shot.
Mikel Jensen went the distance on the mound and spread out seven Walla Walla hits. The visitors' two runs both came in the third.
The Twins (31-9) will wrap up their regular season Tuesday with a league doubleheader against Coeur d'Alene, which will start at 5 p.m. at Harris Field. L-C will then play host to the district tournament starting Thursday.
Following the Twins' win Sunday afternoon, the Burton Memorial Game was held, which pitted the current Twins against former L-C players. The youngsters won in a lighthearted contest that was well-attended, Blackwell said.
The game - named in honor of the late Josh Burton, a former Twin who died in an automobile accident in 2008 - also featured a silent auction and raffle, and the money is used for scholarships and donated to the L-C program, Blackwell said.
"Bruce and Connie and Brian did a wonderful job with it," Blackwell said, referring to Burton's parents and brother.
