BOISE - They didn't produce like they normally do at the plate, but the Lewis-Clark Twins won't necessarily blame their suddenly stagnant offense for a 10-0 loss to the Boise Capitals on Tuesday in the first round of the Idaho Class AA state Legion baseball tournament at Timberline High.
The bats were certainly part of the problem, but the Twins were ultimately doomed by the 11 free passes given up by their pitchers in a game shortened to just six innings due to the mercy rule.
After hitting the highest of highs last weekend at the district tournament, the Twins are now just one defeat away from the lowest of lows.
"We'll fight our way through that losers' bracket and see what we are tomorrow now that we're there," Twins coach Kyle Blackwell said.
In a loser-out game, the Twins will meet Pocatello today at noon.
The Boise Caps, who had stunned L-C twice last year in the state title round, held the Twins to four hits. Boise collected only eight, but many of those were timely base knocks that came with runners in scoring position.
"Credit to (them). We just had a weird day," said Blackwell, who started Jake Munoz before bringing in Dalton Stamper in the fourth inning. "It was a bad day for it ... I know the next time they toe that rubber, they'll be better. (Boise) had timely hitting as well. They took advantage of the free bags."
