Merchants, Cubs settle for split

OROFINO - The Orofino Merchants claimed a walk-off victory in Wednesday's first game, but the Lewis-Clark Cubs bounced back in the second contest to forge an American Legion baseball split Wednesday.

The Merchants won 3-2 while the Cubs took their game 9-6.

Orofino brought in the winning run in the seventh inning off an L-C error, which was committed on a ball batted by Bayley Noah.

In the second game, the Cubs scored five runs in the third to take the lead for good.

L-C got three hits from Coy Stout while George Lopez and Garrett Beckman notched two knocks apiece.

The Lewis-Clark Cubs handed out too many free passes, as they lost both sides of a league doubleheader against the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen at Harris Field.

L-C lost 11-2 and 6-3.

Tui Moliga led the Cubs in the opener with two hits while Coy Stout tallied two knocks in the late game.

The Cubs (2-4 overall, 1-3 in league) will play a doubleheader at Orofino today starting at 5 p.m.

Twins split on final stop of road trip

ONATRIO, Ore. - The Lewis-Clark Twins' season-opening road trip was capped by their first loss, but their coach was still pleased with the 4-1 showing.

The Twins split an American Legion baseball doubleheader with the Treasure Valley Stars on Tuesday, as L-C won the first 8-2 and the Stars took the second 2-1.

The Twins trailed most of the opener, with Treasure Valley leading 2-0 heading into the fifth. L-C tied it with single tallies in the fifth and sixth, then emphatically siezed the lead with a six-run seventh. The Twins smacked four hits in the seventh, with Wyatt Baldwin delivering a bases-clearing triple.

Twins starter Cooper Lund worked five strong innings and tallied eight strikeouts while Chase Adkison handled the sixth and seventh. Adkison's 1-2-3 sixth seemed to inspire L-C's offensive eruption in the top of the seventh, coach Kevin Maurer said.

In the second game, it was Treasure Valley that rallied late to claim victory. The Stars tied it at 1-1 with a run in the sixth, then brought home a walk-off score in the seventh on Connor Buck's RBI single.

Riley Way started at pitcher for the Twins - his first start on the mound in two years, Maurer said - and was efficent, throwing just 55 pitches through five innings. He carried a no-hitter into the fourth, thanks in part to Adkison, playing in right field, throwing out a batter before he could get to first.

While it ended on a sour note, the Twins' trip was mostly impressive, as they outscored their opponents 36-7, outhit them 44-19 and struck out just six times compared to 32 times for their foes.

"It was nothing to hang their head about," Maurer said. "... We were pretty pleased with the trip that we had."

The Twins will next make their home debut in the Dwight Church Tournament, which starts Thursday at Harris Field. L-C will play the Spokane North Stars at noon and a Pendleton, Ore., club at 7 p.m. on the first day.

Twins do damage at plate in win with Boise

The Lewis-Clark Twins generated 15 hits and drew 10 walks on their way to an 11-1 victory over the Boise Senators in American Legion baseball action Sunday at Borah High.

The Twins, who improved to 3-0, led 4-0 after six innings, then erupted for five runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to invoke the mercy rule in a nonleague game scheduled for nine innings.

Chase Adkison swatted four singles, AJ Davis notched three hits and Chris Powell and Jackson Fuller added two apiece.

The Twins' plate discipline and understanding of pitches were notable, coach Kevin Maurer said.

"Over our last three games, it's been pretty impressive how we've done in the batter's box," he said.

L-C pitchers Kyle Van Boeyen and Luke White wiggled their way out of trouble several times, Maurer said. The Senators ended up stranding 11 baserunners.

The Twins' season-opening road trip continues today with a 6 p.m. PDT contest against the Boise Seminoles.
