Bucs Merit Award-Derrick Ater Merit Award
This gentleman is a believer in Legion baseball in general. He
got involved with the organization when his son, started playing in the late
1990s, and - unlike most parents - stuck with it after his child moved on.
Once he got involved
with Legion baseball, it was with the B&P Pac, a 1990s program that was
based in Clarkston. It was this guy and a few other Pac parents who arranged
for Washington kids to once again play for the Twins in 1998, ending about a
decade of valley Legion players being separated by the state line.
But that wasn't the end
of the story. Washington Legion officials weren't always keen on letting
players from their state join an Idaho team.
This fellow was in the middle of that battle, which kept him involved in
Legion ball even after his son went on to play at Walla Walla Community
College.
He eventually became
Idaho state commissioner. How did that happen?
As commissioner, his responsibilities included updating the
state rule book each year, reviewing the eligibility of all players in the
state and keeping tabs on the organization's budget. He also served several
times as an assistant director at regional tournaments in the Great Lakes or
Great Plains areas, as well as the Legion's national baseball committee.
He got to see Legion
baseball at its best: The organization's World Series settled in Shelby, N.C.,
in 2011, and games there draw as many as 7,000 spectators. He was fortunate to
attend three tournaments there, including an appearance by the L-C Twins.
Today he still continues to volunteer with the Lewis-Clark Twins
and Cubs but has retired as the commissioner of Idaho Legion baseball.
Beyond those duties, he has also been a stickler for the values
of Legion baseball. American Legion is a veterans group that was founded at the
end of World War I, and its baseball program - one of the country's first youth
sports organizations - was established in 1925. From the start, patriotism and
sportsmanship have been its bedrock principles.
Almost all Legion players he believes "walk away with great
experiences, great friends and a love of baseball,"
Each summer, American Legion baseball players end up reciting, a
least a couple of times, the organization's Code of Sportsmanship. It includes
these lines:
"Keep a stout heart in defeat/Keep my pride under in
victory."
This guy has heard the code countless times,
But "it makes perfect sense to me," he added. "It
means don't be cocky. And if you lose? Stout heart - you've got a game
tomorrow. Those are values that he really believe in."
Derrick Ater retired as
an attorney and stepped down from his administrative role in Legion baseball. Continues to support all teams from beneath
the 1st base bleachers.
What a better fit could
we ask for, but for the BUCS Merit Award to be the Derrick Ater Merit Award.

Julian Washburn played in our legion program for 4 years, his final year winning Idaho state, Region 7, and went to the American Legion World Series where he threw a 9 inning shutout in the opening round. He then went and played at Walla Walla Community College for 1 year, and on to the University of San Francisco where he pitched for 4 years.
While pitching at Walla Walla Community College, he made 11 appearances with eight starts as a freshman in 2018 ... Had a near-3-to-1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio with 54 Ks and only 19 walks in 54 innings pitched. Julian played his prep ball at Lewiston High School, graduating in 2017 ... Was a two-way threat for the Bengals as a senior, posting a 5-1 record and 0.73 ERA on the mound while hitting .385 with five doubles and 18 RBIs ... Helped lead Lewiston High to the Idaho High School Activities Association 5A playoffs, reaching the consolation final. At the University of San Francisco, Julian began his sophomore year with an 8-0 record, and won the program’s Newcomer of the Year award. At USF, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in History, and is currently attending LCSC to receive his teaching certificate.
He says that he is excited to share all of the knowledge he learned at the Division 1 level with the local up-and-coming players.
A native of Turlock California, Darren Trainor is in his first year as the head coach of the Lewis-Clark Twins American Legion Baseball Program. Trainor is also the head coach of the Lewiston High School Baseball Program. Under Trainor the Lewiston Bengals have made it to back to back Idaho 5A State Tournament Appearances in 2022 & 2023, and won a 5A IEL District Championship in 2022. Trainor was named the IEL 5A Baseball coach of the year in 2022. Trainor started his coaching career at Lewis-Clark State in 2021, the Warriors finished 4th in the country and had a record of 44-6. Trainor graduated from Turlock High School in 2013 as a two-sport athlete in baseball and basketball. He started his collegiate baseball career at Merced Community College and earned all-conference and conference Gold Glove honors as a freshman. In the summer of 2017, he played in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Trainor transferred to LCSC and played for the Warriors in 2018 and 2019, finishing his career with a .346 batting average, 104 hits, 77 RBI and nine home runs. In the 2019 season under Head Coach Jake Taylor, he was voted the NAIA West Gold Glove catcher, the NAIA West Player of the Year and a Second-Team NAIA All-American. After the 2019 season, Trainor played a season professionally in Australia in the Greater Brisbane League in the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia. Trainor graduated from Lewis-Clark State in the spring of 2019 with a Bachelor’s in Kinesiology and an Idaho Teaching Credential. He currently resides in Lewiston and works at Lewiston High School as a PE instructor.

Lewis Clark Cubs Assistant Coach
Dalton Stamper
Dalton Stamper is currently an assistant pitching coach for Bellevue University in Bellevue, Nebraska. Born and raised in Lewiston, Idaho, playing 3 years of legion baseball here in the valley. After high school career, he spent a year and a half playing at LCSC for Jeremiah Robbins before transferring to Wenatchee Valley College and pitching for the 2015 NAIA World Series MVP Beau Kerns. After a successful first year at WVC, he underwent Tommy John surgery during the beginning of his second season. After 12 months of rehab, he signed with Bellevue University where he continued his baseball career, but running into some problems with rehab, he made a tough decision to quit playing baseball, but was offered the chance to coach and work with the pitching staff at Bellevue University. Dalton is very excited to give back to the LC baseball community, as well as giving knowledge to these young players to allow them to play baseball at the next level.

Kent Knigge
Kent joins the Lewis -Clark American Legion Baseball program for the second time as a Head Coach. He coached the LC Twins from 2011 through 2013 leading the Twins to two AA Area District Championships, 3rd place at the 2012 State AA Finals, and the Team Sportsmanship Trophy in 2012 presented by the State of Idaho Legion Commissioner. He is excited to be part of what he calls a "dynamic organization" in the world of prep age sports for Lewis-Clark Post 13 baseball and feels blessed to work with outstanding human beings on all levels of the organization.
Coach Knigge has been married to his wife Sandra for 36 years, has four sons, Cameron, Tyler, Kyle and Kasey. He has four grandchildren and is looking forward to including his family in the 2021 LC ALB adventure.

Ray Pedrina, Assistant Coach LC Twins
Originally from Kapolei, Hawaii, Ray graduated from James
Campbell High School in 2013. He came to
the LC Valley as a freshman where he played left field for the LC
Warriors. Ray started as the center
fielder and leadoff batter, he was apart of the 2015 and 2017 NAIA National
Champion teams. During his junior year
he suffered a broken hand and foot, both which required surgery forcing him to
redshirt in 2016. In the spring of 2018
Ray graduated with his bachelors of science degree in Kinesiology with an
emphasis in Exercise Science & a minor in Business. He currently works for the City of Lewiston
as the Recreation Coordinator. This will
be Ray’s second year in the Lewis Clark American Legion program.

Kevin
Maurer, Head Coach LC Twins
A Lewiston High
School graduate Coach Maurer is entering his 6th year coaching the
Twins and his 4th year as
head coach. In his first season at the helm he helped guide the Twins to the
American Legion World Series. Coach Maurer played for Lewiston High School,
earning 1st team all-league Junior and Senior year, then 1 year as a Cub, 3 years
as a Twin in our program. He continued his baseball by playing at WWCC and
currently sits 3rd all time in single season hits. Kevin earned his
Bachelor of Science degree in both Exercise Science and Health and Physical
Education at the University of Idaho. He is the Head Coach at Genesee High
School and has guided them to 4 state championship games, winning State titles
in 2015 and 2018. He currently works for
the Clarkston School District. He and his wife Carol, and 1 year old son Calvin
live in Lewiston with their dog Griffey.
