PULLMAN - The Lewis-Clark Twins became the first ever American Legion baseball team to win the Palouse Summer Series with a grueling 10-inning victory over the Bellevue Boys of Summer on Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
"Usually it's been all travel ball teams who have won it," said Lewis-Clark coach Kevin Maurer, whose team stands at 20-5 on the season and went 6-0 overall in the series
The Twins started their day by topping Kalispell, Mont., 6-2 in the semifinals behind a complete game from pitcher Wyatt Baldwin.
The final against Bellevue, however, saw them fall behind early as the Boys of Summer posted a seven-run third inning.
Not to be discouraged, the Twins quickly bounced back with a run in the bottom of the third and an eight-run fourth to take a 9-7 lead. Two more Bellevue runs in the fifth tied things up at 9-9, and there the score remained through the scheduled seven. Lewis-Clark loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth, but was unable to push home the winning run, and the stalemate endured through the ninth.
In the 10th inning, Lewis-Clark's Luke White hit a double, then a single from Chase Adkison pushed him to third base. A strike down center field from Danny Robinson finally propelled White home for the game- and tournament-winning run.
"That was our 10th game in six days, so our players were definitely mentally and physically exhausted," said Maurer. "After that title game, they left no question about their heart.
"This is a squad that just went through the wringer, and I couldn't be more proud of what they were able to accomplish," he concluded.
